Few causes could be more important than the protection of vulnerable children. That’s why the Insurance Advisernet Foundation is especially proud to be contributing ongoing financial assistance to ‘Act for Kids’, an Australian-based charity providing free therapy and support services to children and families who have experienced, or are at risk of, child abuse and neglect.
As part of this support the Foundation recently donated $5,000 towards a nationwide preventive protective behaviours program called ‘Learn to be safe with Emmy and friends’. Act for Kids runs the 5-week program in primary schools with the goal of educating 5-7 year olds about their rights to their own personal safety, teaches them how to identify unsafe situations and what to do if they are worried about an unsafe situation or if things just don’t feel right. The program’s mantra is “Tell, Tell and tell again” and children are encouraged to persistently ask for help from safe grownups until somebody listens and helps them.
“Of course, it’s unfortunate programs like this are even necessary,” said Samantha Melching, Service Development Coordinator. “But they are and they have a very real impact –all the feedback from children and teachers is really positive and -more so than not- schools request Act for Kids to come back the following year. Once the word gets out that we deliver our program free to schools, we are often inundated with requests. The $5,000 donation from Insurance Advisernet Foundation will ensure even more children in the Gold Coast schools will receive this program”
