The Insurance Advisernet Foundation recently made a significant donation to Soul Café, a not-for-profit organisation operating in in the coastal NSW city of Newcastle. The Foundation was delighted to assist in its vital ongoing work in the local Newcastle community following a recommendation by Jeff Pender, Principal from Pender Insurance and Insurance Advisernet Authorised Representative.
Every week Soul Café provides approximately 600 free meals to some of Newcastle’s most disadvantaged community members – many of whom are homeless, have a mental illness, substance abuse issues or live in poverty. However as Soul Café CEO, and local pastor, Rick Prosser explained on presentation of the Foundation’s $5,000 cheque, the meals are only part of the story. Soul Café aims to serve more that just a meal or meet a need – its broader purpose is to help lift those who are less fortunate than most to enjoy a greater level of lifestyle within the local community through a comprehensive approach that helps them to work through their individual issues and re-engage with society.
“During our visit with Rick we also had the great pleasure of meeting Damien, a Soul Café regular,” said Jeff Pender. “Although the café was technically closed, Rick was kind enough to invite him in, listened to his concerns and provided some food for him to take away. Damon actually saw the cheque and thanked me personally for helping out, saying the help that Soul Café provided him and his peers was invaluable. It was a wonderful moment.”
