Key Types of Farm Insurance: What Should You Consider?

A farm is more than a workplace. It can also be your home, your livelihood and the place where valuable machinery, livestock and produce are kept.

With so many different risks, Farm Insurance is often arranged as a package that brings several types of cover together. The sections selected will depend on your farming activities, property and equipment.

What can Farm Insurance include?

Home and Contents: Cover for your farmhouse and personal belongings against insured events such as fire, storm or theft. The insured events and any accidental damage benefits depend on the policy.

Farm buildings and property: Cover for sheds, silos, dairies, fencing and other farm structures. Check which assets are listed and whether infrastructure such as water tanks, pumps and irrigation systems is included.

Machinery and equipment: Cover for tractors, headers and other farm machinery against specified events, such as accidental damage, fire or theft. Mechanical or electrical breakdown may require separate cover.

Livestock: Cover may be available for specified events affecting insured livestock, such as fire or theft. Broader livestock protection, including certain mortality or disease risks, may require specialist insurance.

Public and Products Liability: Protection against certain claims where farming activities or products cause injury to another person or damage to their property, and the business is legally liable.

Transit: Cover may be available for livestock, produce, machinery and other goods while being transported. Check what is insured, when transit begins and ends, and whether loading and unloading are included.

What about crop losses and business interruption?

These need particular attention.

Crop insurance is generally arranged separately and may cover loss of potential yield from specified events such as fire or hail. Drought, flood and other causes of reduced yield should not be assumed to be covered.

Business Interruption insurance may also be available to help with certain financial consequences of an insured event affecting farm operations. Its triggers, benefits and limits vary between policies.

Review your cover as the farm changes

New machinery, additional livestock, expanded infrastructure or changes to production can affect your insurance needs.

Review your sums insured regularly and check whether newly purchased assets have been included. It’s also worth checking how your policy treats seasonal stock levels, hired machinery and equipment used away from the property.

Farm Insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. Speak with your Insurance Advisernet adviser about your property, farming activities and seasonal risks so you can review which covers and limits may be appropriate.
