Don’t Get Caught Out by Disaster Chasers

Don’t Get Caught Out by Disaster Chasers

Natural disasters can leave communities under pressure, and unfortunately, that can create opportunities for opportunistic operators known as “disaster chasers”. These individuals or businesses often appear shortly after storms, floods, bushfires or hail events, targeting people who may already be stressed and overwhelmed.

According to the Australian Government’s Moneysmart and the Insurance Council of Australia, disaster chasers may approach homeowners offering urgent repairs, free inspections, debris removal, or assistance with insurance claims. While some may appear legitimate, many are unlicensed, uninsured, or may pressure people into costly agreements with fine print conditions that can delay or even impact an insurance claim.

Disaster chasers commonly use high-pressure tactics, including:
  • Offering "today only" deals
  • Requesting upfront cash payments
  • Promising repairs significantly cheaper or faster than comptetitors
  • Asking homeowners to sign contracts immediately
  • Claiming they have been send by an insurer when they have not
  • Encouraging homeowners to sign authority forms that limit direct communication with their insurer

In some cases, homeowners may end up paying inflated fees, receiving poor quality or incomplete work, or finding their insurance claim complicated because repairs were carried out without insurer approval. The Insurance Council warns that some disaster chasers may even take a percentage of an insurance settlement, reducing the funds available for proper repairs.

If your property has been impacted by a natural disaster, one of the most important steps is to contact your insurer or adviser before engaging anyone offering repair or claims services. Your insurer can explain the claims process, confirm approved repairers, and help you understand what is covered under your policy.

There are also a few simple ways to protect yourself:
  • Be cautious of unsolicited door-knockers, phone calls, texts or online ads
  • Do not sign contracts or agreements on the spot
  • Avoid paying large upfront deposits
  • Ask for licenses, insurance details and references
  • Verify anyone claiming to represent your insurer
  • Take photos of damage before any work begins
  • Keep copies of all documents and communications

As extreme weather events continue to impact communities across Australia, consumer awareness remains critical. Recent warnings from insurers and financial counselling groups highlight that disaster chasers often target people when they are most vulnerable and under pressure to act quickly.

If you are unsure about an offer, contractor, or request for payment following a disaster event, speak with your insurer or insurance adviser first before agreeing to any work or signing any documents.
